Strengthening well-being approaches to economic policy making

Strengthening well-being approaches to economic policy making

Plenary Roundtable - While well-being approaches are becoming increasingly widespread – over two-thirds of OECD countries have developed some form of official well-being framework – they are often still seen as separate to the business of ‘hard’ economics. Yet, in today’s world it is increasingly clear that the economic, social, environmental, and distributional aspects of major societal challenges are inherently linked and cannot be addressed in isolation. As recognised by the 2023 G7 Japanese Presidency note, economic policy making needs to draw on multidimensional evidence on welfare and well-being to be effective and fit-for-purpose. This high-level Roundtable explored how the policy levers and decision-making parameters change when approached through a well-being lens, discussing the opportunities and barriers for building strong economies that deliver inclusive and sustainable well-being within planetary and social boundaries.

This session was moderated by Romina Boarini, Director of Well-Being, Inclusion, Sustainability and Equal Opportunity OECD WISE Centre.
