Gender equity and well-being

Gender equity and women’s empowerment are core aspects of well-being approaches to policy and societal action. Achieving equal access to resources and opportunities for women will entail recognising the unique challenges and opportunities faced by women in achieving well-being across different dimensions, as well as challenging deep-rooted social norms and systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality.

The Forum gave particular attention to issues of gender equity in the context of climate change, data production and usage, and the digital transformation. Women often bear the disproportionate burden of climate-related impacts and by promoting gender-responsive climate policies and empowering women as agents of change, societies can harness their knowledge and leadership to develop more effective and equitable strategies for climate resilience and sustainability. In the context of digital transformation and AI, women often face barriers in accessing and benefiting from digital technologies, perpetuating existing inequalities, while biases in AI algorithms and data development can further marginalise women and reinforce gender stereotypes. The Forum showcased perspectives that showed the way forward for emphasising gender equity and women’s empowerment in well-being approaches to measurement, research, policy, and other forms of action.
