Join us to hear about the practical steps being taken to integrate nature and people into business decision-making, while ensuring that there is transparency on the underlying logic and confidence that the metrics used, are fit for purpose. We demystified how this can be done, demonstrate real world examples, and to show how it can both inform and transform economic decision making.

International organisations like UNDP and OECD can play crucial roles by raising awareness, advocating for holistic policies, and supporting resilience strategies. Generali, as a global insurance leader, contributes through innovative insurance solutions for climate adaptation, inclusive products for underserved populations, and investment in education and awareness programs. This event aimed to foster dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, highlighting the importance of integrating well-being for people and the planet and promoting a future where resilience and sustainability are central priorities.

Empowering Children Through Better Environments

Seminar organised by the OECD Centre on Well-Being, Inclusion, Sustainability and Equal Opportunity (WISE)
When: 6 November 2024, 8:00-8:50
Where:  Studio 3, Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Moricone

Children’s well-being and development are deeply impacted by the environments in which they grow up. Creating positive and stimulating spaces for children is complex, as these environments offer both opportunities and risks, especially when children lack the resources to fully benefit from them or manage potential dangers. This is particularly relevant in their local neighbourhoods, in educational settings, and digital spaces, where children spend a substantial amount of time. This seminar explored the key challenges in creating supportive physical and digital spaces for children, and how coordinated efforts from policymakers, the private sector, third parties, and communities can help address these issues. Specifically, it presented findings from research projects carried out by the OECD WISE Centre, as well as examples from practice. This seminar also discussed actions to achieve wider implementation of child-friendly environments.

The nexus between well-being and productivity: what’s next in the research agenda and why that matters for corporates and investors

Seminar organised by the OECD Centre on Well-Being, Inclusion, Sustainability and Equal Opportunity (WISE)
When: 6 November 2024, 8:00-8:50
Where:  Studio 1, Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Moricone

The rapid rise of corporate sustainability has mobilised the private sector to address social and environmental risks and impacts. Even though for many market actors, the rise of “ESG” has always been about strengthening the bottom line, recent years have seen a backlash pushed by those who believe that environmental and social objectives are not the responsibility of business. At the same time, advances in the regulatory space will necessitate further corporate attention to environmental and social issues, although it is yet unclear whether this will truly drive transformative change.

Against these developments, questions around the relevance of well-being, diversity and inclusion for market actors remain pertinent. While there are intrinsic reasons why companies and financial institutions may choose to contribute to people’s well-being, there continues to be a need to strengthen the financial case and evaluate the relationship between the well-being of workers, workplace inequalities and (lack of) diversity, and productivity and firm performance.

During this seminar, we considered the state of research about the linkages between well-being, diversity, and firm-level and investor-level outcomes. The discussion provided a space to reflect on the practical implications of the existing evidence base for businesses and financial institutions in the current environment.

Beyond GDP to sustainable and inclusive wellbeing

Workshop organised by MERGE
When: 6 November 2024, 08:00 -08:50
Where: Studio 2, Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Moricone

MERGE brings together various research fields, civil society actors and policymakers in the European and International context, working towards ensuring that the new paradigm of Sustainable and Inclusive Wellbeing (SIWB) can be fully embedded into policymaking processes. It integrates the emerging frameworks, metrics, models, and policies being developed and discussed as part of a range of ongoing Horizon Europe funded projects. Together, they argue that the conceptual framework of Sustainable and Inclusive Wellbeing is increasingly relevant and has the potential to inform the ongoing policy debate on more inclusive and sustainable economic policies. To transform the current system will require not just scattered efforts but a new integrated system of metrics, models, and policies all aimed at achieving the new goal of SIWB rather than merely seeing economic growth as an end.
This seminar discussed the novelty of the framework and explore how it can be applied in practice. A recent policy advocacy paper was briefly presented followed by short inputs by high-level experts in this field, the seminar will provide an interactive space to discuss further integrating SIWB at EU and international level.
